The Alnwick Garden \ Northumberland \ UK
Developing an image-led website with interactive features and responsive design helped create an online experience that was not only worthy of the extraordinary Alnwick Garden, but truly engaging for visitors.
Alnwick Garden is one of the UK’s most extraordinary contemporary gardens with visitor numbers often exceeding 250,000 annually. However, the website for Alnwick Garden didn’t quite match up to the real life experience of visiting the gardens. The team behind the Alnwick Garden decided to source a creative agency to help them bring their online experience up to speed with a modern look and feel, and a user experience that better reflected this well-known and much-loved tourist attraction.
From an internal perspective, the team at Alnwick Garden wanted to restructure their current website and move to a fully content managed site; something they would be able to easily control and regularly update themselves.
From a user perspective, a modern and responsive design was needed to improve the experience across all potential user devices.
Overall, the aim of developing a new website was to provide a much more engaging online experience, one that would help users connect with Alnwick Garden as a brand, tourist attraction and as a charity.
Inspired by the striking and contemporary garden designs at Alnwick Garden, the Keltie Cochrane team took a bold approach to the look of the new website. An image-lead design was chosen that made use of impressive landscape and scenery photography. We also created a bespoke side panel that displays all the handy information users often want at a glance, much like a dashboard. The panel includes upcoming events, today’s weather, ticket booking and opening times.
Functionality-wise users now have multiple ticket options including the option of buying tickets for any season, becoming a member and making donations to the charity. Garden information is easy to access with an interactive map, which changes with the seasons and has details on each of the different areas of the gardens. We also wanted this to be practical, so visitors can download the map if that want to bring it with them on the day. All of these new features provide more frequent and better quality opportunities for users to engage with Alnwick Garden.
We appointed Keltie Cochrane to design our new website. They came up with a great design along with someMark Dawson Business Improvement Officer
bespoke new graphics. Keltie Cochrane worked closely with one of our other companies to build some seamless
integration. From our experience with them on our website it lead us into asking for Keltie Cochrane to
redesign all our other print based materials including all garden signage, style guides and our Annual Review,
we have a great working relationship.
